Presentation - Learning English by Doing

Finally, I've accomplished English conversation course at LIA. The final test that I should do was doing presentation. This is my presentation. Hopefully, it will be useful for you to get such inspiration. for you guys who are in CV6 level, Good Luck and give my regret to Mrs. Andam..

Assalamu’alaikum wr. wb. Good evening everybody.  Thank you for __________ and all students who have given me this great opportunity. I’m Citra from CV6 LIA Pramuka. I would like to present a nice topic about learning English by doing. Before that, I want to ask you, do you still have difficulties when you are learning English? If you do, don’t worry about it because now I‘m going to tell you the way to learn English by doing such interesting activities.

I’ve split my talk into 3 parts, the first is the definition of learning English by doing, the second is the examples of learning English by doing and the last part is the advantages of learning English by doing. Hopefully, this presentation will be useful for you to improve your English. This presentation will take around 7 minutes. If you have any questions, I’d be glad to answer them in the end of my presentation.

Let’s begin with the first part, the definition of learning by doing. It is essentially about getting involved in an activity. There is only one way to learn how to do something and that is to do it. If you want to learn how to kick a ball, drive a car, or cook a fried chicken, you have to do it. It has the same case of learning English. If you want to be able to speak English fluently and accurately, you have to try to speak English in any occasion. Whether your grammar is correct or not, at least you have tried to speak English. The most important thing is doing it as soon as possible, after that you can improve your grammar.

Now, what are the activities that you can apply in learning English by doing? First, you should practice your speaking skills by interviewing foreigners. You don’t need to have a formal interview just like a reporter or interviewer, you just have to befriend of them. You can get acquainted with foreigners in many places, for example by social network such as facebook, twitter and email, be nicely and make a simple talk with them, say that you really want to befriend. You also can get friend from other countries through your friends. If your friends have a friend of other nationalities, you can ask your friends to introduce you to them. Then you can try to speak English with them. Another way if you want to directly get acquainted with foreigner, you should visit public places which there are a lot of foreigner. For example, Jalan Jaksa and Bali, there are many foreigners there. Take your opportunities by approaching them in a nice situation, making a small talk, and being friendly.  You can also attend International events, such as seminar, exhibition, expo, show, or festival. Be active to find the International events so that you don’t miss the opportunities to get friends from other countries. 

If you are too busy to attend the International events, don’t think that you can’t improve your English skills. Keep trying to have English conversation with your friends. I’m sure all of you must have friend who can speak English well. Approach him/her and say that you want to talk with him/her in English. If your friend is kind to you, he or she will be happy to do that. By doing this you will learn and get the opportunities to improve your English skills. If you don’t have friend who can’t speak English well, it doesn’t matter because you can ask your friend to speak English. You are learning, so don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Remember that English is a language, if you don’t practice it, it will be useless. 

Many learners get speechless when they are talking to a foreigner. They do understand when he/she talks but they can’t respond well. To overcome this problem, you should increase your vocabulary by doing, such as watching TV in English program, reading English newspaper or magazines, watching English movie and listening to the English music consistently. From those activities indirectly you have learnt listening, reading, vocabulary and grammar. Moreover, you can expand your knowledge by watching International news or talk show and listening to the English music. 

Can you get the advantages from learning English by doing? Of course! First, it’s easier to understand and remember. You can enjoy those activities without thinking too much about the grammar or vocabulary which can make you feel confused then. It’s better for you to learn English by doing the interesting activities. Imagine learning English by using text book only. You will feel bored and get tired easily but if you learn English by doing, it will be more interesting. You just make a conversation with your friend or watching English movie, indirectly u have learnt English. It is very interesting.

In short, learning English by doing activities will be useful and more interesting, and then you can improve of your English skills indirectly. Keep trying to do it and be consistently.
